Among the most exciting options is the chance to wear real samurai armor and transport yourself back to Japan’s Sengoku era. Clad in meticulously crafted armor and striking poses for professional photos, you’ll feel like you’ve entered the world of a samurai film.
This immersive samurai experience is quickly gaining popularity as one of the most thrilling ways to engage with Kyoto. In this article, we’ll explore the allure of the samurai experience in Kyoto, share the top spots to visit, and walk you through how to secure your reservation.
Who Were the Samurai?

Samurai were Japan’s elite warriors from the Kamakura to Edo periods (1185–1868), skilled in swordsmanship and martial arts. They served feudal lords or shoguns, maintaining peace or fighting in wars.
Yet, samurai were more than skilled warriors. They lived by bushido, a code that emphasized loyalty, honor, and courage. This philosophy made them symbols of moral integrity and spiritual strength, earning them deep respect both in Japan and beyond.
The Global Appeal of Samurais
Even today, samurais remain a global symbol of Japanese culture. From films like The “Last Samurai” to characters in anime and video games, they are portrayed as proud warriors embodying aesthetics and spirituality. This image of the “warriors with a soul” continues to captivate people worldwide, far beyond their role as fighters.

Professional filmmakers will create your very own ‘Samurai Short Movie,’ starring you. We’ll edit it to approximately 2 minutes, the perfect length to casually share with family and friends.
- What kind of photography is samurai photography?
Think of magazine-style, model-like shots taken by a pro. These are not CG composites—they're real, dramatic portraits.

The maximum number of participants per session is 6 people. If your group is larger, please contact us in advance to discuss arrangements.
- Do you offer service in foreign languages?

- Is there any armor that looks good on women?
We believe any armor will suit you, but the armor at SHOGUN KYOTO is specially designed with women in mind. The archer-style samurai armor is especially popular among female guests. Additionally, the ‘Naoe Kanetsugu’ kabuto features the kanji for ‘Love’ on its crest, making that set a favorite with women as well.
- Should I bring anything with me?
Since you’ll be wearing a kabuto (helmet), your hairstyle may get a bit messy—so it’s a good idea to bring a brush or comb. Also, don’t forget your camera or smartphone! Feel free to snap plenty of photos and videos to capture all the fun memories!
- What is the difference with S rank and A rank?
The difference between A Rank and S Rank lies mainly in the price and quality of the armor itself. This price difference reflects the materials used, the level of craftsmanship, and the amount of time required to produce each piece. That said, even A Rank armor is very well made—highly detailed and by no means cheap-looking.
As a reference, adult A Rank armor typically ranges from approximately 500,000 to 1,500,000 JPY, while S Rank armor ranges from around 1,500,000 to 6,000,000 JPY.
- What options of the STUDIO SHOOTING PLAN are popular?
Our most popular option is the one that allows the use of a variety of items during the shoot. With the basic plan, only a sword can be used. However, for an additional 2,000 JPY per group, you may also use spears, matchlock guns, bows, a fog machine, and projection mapping during the photo session.
