Who Were the Samurai?

samurai experience

Samurai were Japan’s elite warriors from the Kamakura to Edo periods (1185–1868), skilled in swordsmanship and martial arts. They served feudal lords or shoguns, maintaining peace or fighting in wars.

Yet, samurai were more than skilled warriors. They lived by bushido, a code that emphasized loyalty, honor, and courage. This philosophy made them symbols of moral integrity and spiritual strength, earning them deep respect both in Japan and beyond.

The Global Appeal of Samurais

Even today, samurais remain a global symbol of Japanese culture. From films like The “Last Samurai” to characters in anime and video games, they are portrayed as proud warriors embodying aesthetics and spirituality. This image of the “warriors with a soul” continues to captivate people worldwide, far beyond their role as fighters.

Can I go outside wearing the armor?

Sorry, the armor experience is limited to inside the studio only.

When and how do I receive the photos taken during the session?

Can you tell me more about Samurai Movie?

Professional videographers will film your “Samurai Short Movie,” approximately 2 minutes long. Tailored to the season of your visit, the movie will feature “cherry blossoms” in spring, “fresh greenery” in summer, “autumn leaves” in fall, or “snow” in winter, making it a cherished travel memory.

What kind of photography is samurai photography?

Think of magazine-style, model-like shots taken by a pro. These are not CG composites—they're real, dramatic portraits.

Is there a limit on group size?

The basic limit for the number of participants is 5, but if the room is a little cramped, we can accommodate up to 7 people. If you need more than that, please make two reservations at different times.

Do you offer service in foreign languages?

English only—and just everyday conversation level. If you speak slowly, we’ll do our best! For anything more complicated, we’ll use a translation app. Guests from all over the world are very welcome!

What should I wear on the day? Any recommendations?

No dress code at all—your regular travel clothes are perfectly fine. We’ll provide everything you need to wear under the armor, including socks. You can change into those at the studio before the experience.

Can you accommodate tour groups or large parties?

Definitely! We’d appreciate it if you could contact us in advance so we can discuss timing and arrangements. We’re happy to help you create some amazing memories!

Can I take photos with my own smartphone?

Absolutely! You're more than welcome to take your own photos. We also include some free time during the session, so take as many fun memories as you'd like!

What payment methods do you accept?

We’re a cashless facility. Credit cards and various e-payment options are accepted, but we do not accept cash. Thanks for understanding!

Is there any armor that looks good on women?

We believe any armor will suit you, but the armor at SHOGUN KYOTO is specially designed with women in mind. The archer-style samurai armor is especially popular among female guests. Additionally, the ‘Naoe Kanetsugu’ kabuto features the kanji for ‘Love’ on its crest, making that set a favorite with women as well.

Should I bring anything with me?

Since you’ll be wearing a kabuto (helmet), your hairstyle may get a bit messy—so it’s a good idea to bring a brush or comb. Also, don’t forget your camera or smartphone! Feel free to snap plenty of photos and videos to capture all the fun memories!
