From there, he governed his lands for decades, developing infrastructure, encouraging commerce, and strengthening the influence of the Date clan.
Masamune was also known for his outward-looking vision. In 1613, he sent a diplomatic mission led by the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga to Spain and Rome. This historic embassy demonstrated that even during the age of the samurai and the shogun, Japan was beginning to interact with the wider world.
